Brake Pads
Brake pads are a critical part of your vehicle's braking system, along with the brake calipers and brake rotors. Together, they produce the friction, or resistance, needed to slow your wheels and eventually stop your tires from rotating.
How Brake Pads Work
The brake pads are attached to the calipers, protecting both them and the rotors from metal-on-metal damage. When you press your foot against the brake pedal, the master brake cylinder sends hydraulic brake fluid to the pistons. The building pressure forces the calipers to clamp the pads onto the brake rotors.
Types of Brake Pads
There are four. Most cars and SUVs have organic, since they're trustworthy, cost-efficient, and easy on the rotors. Trucks tend to be equipped with metallic or ceramic. Metallic brake pads feel firmer and resist heat better. Ceramic brake pads are more reliable in wet weather and generally make less noise. Finally, there are carbon fiber brake pads. Since they're toughest and most temperature-resistant, they're ideal for sports cars and performance vehicles.
How to Spot Failing Brake Pads
Unfortunately, brake pads don’t last forever. When yours go bad, you can't depend on your brakes to stop as reliably as you're accustomed. Fortunately, there are signs to let you know that your brake pads are going bad. They include:
- Bouncing or vibrating brake pedal
- Squealing, grinding, or squeaking sounds
- Taking longer to come to a stop
- Dashboard warning light comes on
